Gotcha,... Santa Claus !!!

"Gotcha,... Santa Claus!" - {An X'mas Short Story}.

It was 24th of December - a Christmas eve. Little Johnny was in high spirits. The school had closed down for the holidays, and no matter what all fun or games this little six year old had, nothing could delight him more than the very fact that he needn't attend school for few days.

Christmas is the season of sharing of joy and happiness and spreading the meaning of love, for which Christ was born. Christmas signifies the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ in a manger in Bethlehem on a cold winter night. The mass held in church remembering Christ’s birth later came to be known as “Christ’s mass” or simply “Christmas”!

Christmas won't be complete without Christmas tree and Crib, Cake and Wine, Bells and Chime, Carols and Hymns, Gifts and Feasts and at last - Santa Claus! Most of these elements of Christmas were already ready for little Johnny and some were on its way and Johnny was all the more eager and enthusiastic and was looking forward to celebrating Christmas with all vigour.

It was late in the evening and though the sun had already set, the meek rays of the twilight gave a golden glow to the dusk. The trees and flowers which were drenched in the dew of the  evening mist of winter, were glinted by the golden rays of the sunset, and were swaying in the cool breeze of December. It appeared as if nature itself was decorating the place for Christmas. Though all the windows and doors of little Johnny's house were shut, the eerie howling sound of the breeze could be distinctly heard, which was blended with the distant sounds of Christmas carols and the chime of the church bell…

The trees and flowers bathed in golden sunshine swaying and dancing merrily to the tune of the singing breeze in the chill air of the December evening – was more than sufficient to say that it was the time of X’mas.

Johnny was sitting on the thick red carpet in the sitting room of his house playing with his old toys and gazing proudly at the magnificent Christmas tree that he and his mom had set up the previous week. The aroma of the plum cake being baked in the kitchen wafted through the air and filled the whole house. The light music of the melodious Christmas song - "I'm dreaming of a White Christmas" was being played in Johnny's dad's iPod. The decorations in the house were done the previous week itself and Johnny had helped his mom to set up the Christmas tree and the crib. Now he was too eager to receive his Christmas gift and to catch a glimpse of Santa Claus who comes secretly at night with the gifts.

Children are narrated the bedtime story of Santa Claus, who arrives every X'mas on a sledge driven by reindeers from North Pole, with gifts for children, while their parents themselves buy presents for them. When children wake up in the morning of the Christmas day they would be delighted and thrilled on seeing the gifts brought by Santa. Johnny had always wondered if the story was true and whether he could ever catch a glimpse of Santa during any of the Christmas's. Unlike previous times, he was determined to meet Santa that night!!!

Johnny's dad, Mr. Thomas was in the kitchen talking to his mom who was busy with the baking. Johnny stood up and walked towards the kitchen. He could overhear his dad talking to mom about plans of going to the church early in the morning for the Christmas mass and was discussing whether to wake Johnny up and take him along with them or leave him back at home.

Johnny walked to the kitchen and went straight to his mom and said, "Mommy, tonight I'm gonna stay awake to get a glimpse of Santa who will be bringing my gifts".

His parents gave a quick laughter and his mom patted him on his head and said "Okay honey, let's see if you will stay awake to see Santa and say “how-do-you-do” to him..."

She continued with her busy work, and Johnny ran back to the front room to play again with his toys.

Later that evening they had a quick dinner. Mrs. Thomas was wearied after all the homely chores, and Mr. Thomas was back home after a hectic day at office. They spoke little during their dinner. Afterwards, Johnny was persuaded to go to sleep and he reluctantly went to his bedroom which was upstairs. He wanted to stay awake and meet Santa Claus, but his parents insisted him to go to sleep. Reluctantly Johnny went to his bedroom. His mom continued her busy chores in the kitchen - the cleaning and the winding up stuff, while his dad was busy on cellphone chatting with his friends.

Johnny couldn't sleep as he was constantly thinking of Santa. He decided to stay awake and when Santa comes he'll rush down to meet him. He tried to stay awake by keeping his eyes wide open staring at the ceiling fan. The room was very quiet except for the creaking sound of the rotating ceiling fan. Though the lights in the room were put off, the light in the hallway filtered into his room through the keyhole of the door and from beneath the door. He could only barely see the ceiling fan, yet he tried to keep on staring at it to remain awake, but unfortunately he soon started feeling drowsy, and felt as if his eyelids were getting heavier. Finally he could no longer keep his eyelids wide open and he gently shut his eyes. It was pitch dark all around. The creaking sound of the rotating fan started to fade away and it became very feeble. His mind drifted away into the world of dreams and Johnny was fast asleep on his bed.

Instantly and instinctively, Johnny sat up on his bed in the middle of the night. He didn't realize for how long he was asleep but he could hear loud music and cheering downstairs and someone shouting his name. He soon sprung out of his bed and rushed downstairs.

He darted down the stairs but stopped short in utter amazement on seeing a man as tall as his dad draped in a bright red gown standing in the room singing a Christmas song and was calling out his name. He had a bright red cap on his head and was wearing a mask which had snow white beard, and chubby cheeks. His mom was right beside him clapping her hand. His dad was nowhere to be seen, but in his joy and delight little did he bother to ask his mom about dad.

"Oh,...Its Santa Claus!!!" cried out little Johnny.

Johnny was in ecstasy that at least finally Santa had decided to appear before him. He ran down and up to him and Santa gave him a warm hug and took him up in his arms and kissed him.

Santa danced around the room with Johnny in his arms and his mom close by who was cheering and clapping for little Johnny. Finally Santa placed him down on the floor and gave him his much awaited gift which he eagerly took in his tender hands. Johnny was so thrilled and amazed on seeing Santa that it was as if his long awaited dream of his little lifetime had borne fruit that night!

Later Santa and his mom persuaded him to go back to bed as it was very late at night and he had to wake up early for church. Johnny reluctantly climbed up the stairs with his precious gift clutched tight in his little hands, while constantly turning back and looking at his mom and Santa, who were waving their hands.

Back in his room, Johnny placed his gift on the table and went to bed. He couldn’t sleep and kept on thinking whether it was all a dream and wondered if he had actually gone down from his bed and met Santa or was he lying all the time on his bed and woke up suddenly after a nice dream!

Johnny tried to sleep but unfortunately he couldn’t. Curiosity and inquisitiveness overtook his slumber and he finally got out of his bed. He silently tip-toed down the stairs. He could see the light from his dad’s bedroom and could overhear his dad and mom talking softly. He silently crept to the bedroom which was partially open and peeped inside. His parents were facing the window and were talking to each other. The red gown of Santa was lying on the bed and the mask was hanging on the chair.

He pushed open the door and walked inside. His parent suddenly turned around and gave an astonished smile. His mom asked if he wasn’t feeling sleepy at all.

He glanced at his dad and gave an emphatic smile - a smile of a cop who had caught a crook red handed.

Johnny asked his dad with a giggle, "Dad, did Santa ask you to dress up like him for this Christmas or was it you who was pretending to be Santa during all Christmas’s ??"

With a chuckle his dad replied " Well, what do you think??”

Johnny retorted with a giggle, “So you thought you can take me in ???”

“Well, were you really taken in?”, replied his dad.

His parent laughed and his dad continued , "When I was a kid I too was taken in by the story of Santa Claus. Every Christmas my dad used to make me laugh by pretending to be Santa, by wearing a mask. As I grew older I could figure it out, and now it's my turn to wear the mask of Santa. When you are a kid you merely watch the game without knowing the rules, but when you grow older you learn the rules. You wear several masks, don several hats and makes others laugh, cries with others, share the joy, share the grievance. When you are too old, you hand over the baton and step down. That’s life and that’s the spirit of Christmas!"

Johnny gave an emphatic and euphoric smile and nodded his head. Johnny didn't fully understand what his dad said, but he was very contended for one thing that finally after being fooled for several years of his life, he could finally catch the elusive Santa Claus. He merrily  walked towards his bedroom. As he climbed up the stairs to his bedroom, little Johnny cried out in joy "Gotcha,... Santa Claus" !!!
