Was the first man the only man ?

Was the first man (Adam) the only man on Earth at that time ??? This is a hot topic of debate  with religious and scientific scholars providing their own independent views.
However, as per the religious belief (Christian/Jewish/Islamic belief) which alone provides a reference about the first man says that GOD Almighty created man the last of all his creations, in His own likeness and named him Adam which means 'Man' in Hebrew, and set him in the Garden of Eden. He created a woman(Eve) out of his rip-bone of the man to be his companion. They lived merrily in the garden, until they ate the forbidden fruit and were expelled from the garden!!!

But its indeed really hard to believe that Adam and Eve were the only people on earth at that time. From a scientific point of view, whenever any new species was created (or evolved as per Darwinism) it was quite obvious that there would be a significant population of it on earth at least to prevent it from becoming extinct. This is the case for all animal and plant species, so for man also, when he was created there must have been quite a good number of men and women across the length and breadth of the Earth. Moreover, like any other species, there are various  "varieties"/"breeds" in human beings as well.  The Races in humans clearly indicate that when we were created there were prototypes of all different races and not just one man of a single race. It is impossible to have offsprings of a different race no matter how many generations passes by or what all genetic recombinations occur lest there should have been predecessors of all human races. Hence when man started his sojourn on the surface of earth, there were all kinds/races of them.

Well, if we solely rely on religion and defer to believe the scientific version then here we go... As per religion, (Genesis in Old Testament of Holy Bible) the first man Adam had two sons Abel and Cain. Cain had resentment with Abel and he murdered him and ran away. He married a woman and raised a family and dwelt in the land of Nod. This clearly indicates that there were other people and other tribes on Earth at that time and not just Adam and Eve and their genealogy alone!

Disclaimer:  My views are not meant to deny any religious beliefs. Religion contains the word of God as well as information about the past. Believing something doesn't mean to have a "blind faith",  but rather a belief gained through faith and logical reasoning. Religion doesn't specifically mention that Adam was the only man and there weren't anybody else on Earth. Instead it merely says Almighty God created man in his likeness and the first man was Adam, which doesn't prove that the first man was the only man!
