If the bee gets extinct, man will live for only four more years!

This famous quote by Sir Albert Einstein "If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would have only four years of life left", makes us ponder deep about the intricacies of nature, and makes us realize the perfection and craftsmanship by which Almighty GOD has created the world and how all the entities co-exist in nature in perfect harmony. We don't just exist in this world but we co-exist. Just like all the cells and organs of the human body constitute the full being, all the living organisms, flora and fauna together constitute what can be called as life on this planet.

The gist of Einstein's famous quote is that if there are no bees there would be no pollination, and hence no fruits or crops to sustain life. Pollination is brought forth mainly by several types of bees and only a minor percentage happens by wind, and other small birds like Humming bird. Hence bees play a major role in the existence of other species.

When we look deep into nature, it is clearly evident how all the elements of nature - plants, animals, the environment, water bodies, etc are all mutually dependent and exists in harmony, in such a way that any disruption in nature's balance will cause severe repercussions and dire consequences. Nature always tries to regain its balanced state, no matter what all natural catastrophes happen or what all imbalance occurs.

For instance let's take into consideration a scene that's at the top of my mind, just to get a picture on the real meaning of co-existence in nature. Consider a hilly terrain with green pastures and meadows and trees aligned all around, and with animals like cows and goats grazing on the grass and a river flowing near by. The trees, grass & the greenery around absorb water & minerals from the soil, and it holds the soil firmly by it's roots. The grass and the leaves are food for the animals while their droppings have minerals and nutrients required for the plants. Thereby all these elements are co-existing. Any imbalance in this harmony will have some ill effects. There are instances where severe deforestation on hilly slopes have resulted in landslides and avalanches.

When we look into the wild, in jungles, we can clearly see this harmony and balance. Animals emit carbon dioxide which are absorbed by plants and trees and they in turn emit oxygen. So is food and nutrients, which are mutually provided by plants and animals. If we travel to a jungle and spend a day there we will feel more energized during the day than being in cities, due to the oxygen rich environment.

A balance is maintained by nature among the creatures at several levels of the food chain as well. Even though there exists wild beasts and carnivorous creatures which devours other herbivores in the jungle, we can see that the number of off springs of the herbivores always outnumber the off springs of carnivores thereby maintaining a stable environment. Always the ratio between the carnivores and herbivores are in such a way that perfect balance in maintained in nature.
Any change in the harmony of nature, or laws of physics would have other dire consequences. The universe is so crafted and all the entities and elements of the universe finely tuned that a small deviation in the laws of physics or a disruption in the pattern would have appalling effects.

For example, unlike all elements which contracts while cooled, water expands on cooling. If water doesn't expand when it is frozen and forms ice, it's density would have been too high, and wouldn't float on liquid water. The ice formed wouldn't floating on top of water. During winter, when lakes and rivers are frozen, liquid water exists beneath the sheet of ice, thus marine creatures can survive the harsh winter. Moreover salt in seawater, lowers the freezing point of water, thereby seas and oceans won't get frozen easily even if mercury dips to zero degree celsius. The anomalous property of water to expand on cooling and the saline sea water has great significance for the sustenance of marine life. Major part of life exists under the sea, and an impact to marine life will indirectly affect all other forms of life as well.

Here is another example. If sound could travel through vacuum or if air existed in outer space instead of vacuum, then the whole universe couldn’t have come to existence as energy from the stars would dissipate in the form of sound energy, (besides electromagnetic radiation), and the enormous sound waves created due to the nuclear fusion explosion in the stars would rip apart the orbits of the planets, and shatter the planets and none of them would ever exist.

Suppose if you were given the power to change the universe, and if you try to tweak a small iota of the structure, pattern, properties or the way it works, it will lead to a collapse of the entire system. Each entity is dependent on other, and no entity can survive or thrive on its own, but together all survives and flourishes.

The extinction of an animal at the bottom of the food chain, can result in the extinction of several creatures or plants. For example, there was a bird called "Dodo" which was native to the African continent. European explorers during their journey to Africa and India, and during their colonial period, used to hunt down the Dodo bird for its delicious meat. Due to excessive poaching, the bird got extinct. Meanwhile, another tree called “Tambalacoque” or dodo tree is now at the verge of extinction. This tree sprouts from the seed in its fruit, which has a very hard endocarp. This fruit was consumed by Dodo bird and from the seeds in the droppings of the bird, the tree used to sprout. Due to the hard endocarp of the fruit, the seeds cannot sprout other than from the bird droppings. The extinction of Dodo, has resulted in the decline of Tambalacoque tree.
Similarly the impact of extinction of several crucial creatures, can ripple across the food chain causing several extinctions and also other consequences to the environment and life.
Nature has a peculiar way of re-establishing the balance when there is any disruption to nature's normal course. At times of volcanic eruptions and other natural catastrophes, the way life flourishes there and how it comes back to normalcy is a matter of great awe and astonishment for researchers. Researchers and scientists still do not have concrete proofs and explanation on how life begins at newly formed islands, which are isolated from the outer world.

Man has always tried to destabilize the balance of nature which has resulted in several consequences. Most of the ill effects in nature is as a result of human actions with little regard in preserving the natural habitat and the rich heritage of nature. Hence today man is facing several of its aftermaths.

We live in an advanced and sophisticated world. Lot of advancement and development has happened in the recent years. Unlike olden days the mortality rate has decreased considerably due to advancement in medical field. Deadly diseases and viruses are nature's way of curbing human population and a way of re-establishing the balance of nature. As several new vaccines were created by man to get immunity from several diseases and as man has eradicated several diseases like smallpox and plague, and as man learnt to "deal with” several diseases newer and much complicated ones were formed by nature. For instance, deadly disease like AIDS wherein the entire immunity system is damaged, thereby no medication can be of any effect, is one of the cruel ways of nature in establishing the balance.

In the last 10 years, technological developments have sky rocketed. Non-degradable waste like plastics and polythene, the toxic gases that are let to the atmosphere, air and water being polluted, the CFCs from air conditioners, are all affecting mankind, environment, and all species alike. In our day to day routine life, we come across lots of carcinogenic substances. Polluted air, contaminated food, toxic emissions from air conditioners, food in plastic containers which are hazardous, cellphone and WiFi radiations, and other harmful substances like fizzy drinks, antiperspirant sprays, etc are some of the carcinogenic and toxic things we are exposed to, daily. Cancers and tumors are on the rise since the technological boom began. The causes of cancers are zeroed upon changes in lifestyle and technological developments. For instance, one of the main reasons for  breast cancer is found out to be the extensive use of anti-perspirant sprays.
Cellphone radiations and WiFi signals are a huge threat both to mankind and nature. The number of sparrows and bees have declined to appalling levels as these radiations are on the rise in the environment. The decline of bees is a grave concern which has to be addressed at all cost.

Human intelligence is limitless and man has reached great heights through technological developments. However man's brains are not fully appreciated by nature and the outbreak of the latest virus "Zika Virus" targeted at man's brain, is one of the crude ways of nature in addressing this issue, by shrinking the brain of newborns.

The impact of human activities to our planet and the threat to the habitat is a very serious one. The decline of natural habitat is happening at an alarming rate. Mass extinction is the final destination where we are headed to, and the bitter and pitiful truth is that we have already boarded the train to that final destination!

An excerpt from Academy award winning actor - Leonardo DiCaprio's speech during the Oscar night:

"And lastly I just want to say this: Making ‘The Revenant’ was about man's relationship to the natural world. A world that we collectively felt in 2015 as the hottest year in recorded history. Our production needed to move to the southern tip of this planet just to be able to find snow. Climate change is real, it is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters, but who speak for all of humanity, for the indigenous people of the world, for the billions and billions of underprivileged people out there who would be most affected by this. For our children’s children, and for those people out there whose voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed. I thank you all for this amazing award tonight. Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take tonight for granted. Thank you so very much."

The real world where we don't belong.

We live in a dynamic world - a world that is ever changing, where scientific & technological developments have grown sky high. Each and every day newer technology is taking its place in the fast growing market, our way of life is changing each & everyday, and we are unknowingly metamorphosing into hybrid versions of our species.

The advent of internet has paved the way to an entirely new world. The world wide web that was spun by Tim Berners Lee has connected the entire world in a huge network and has brought the whole world closer. Gaining knowledge, gathering information, & communicating with anyone anywhere on the planet is only a child's play nowadays, which can just be accomplished either by a finger’s click on our PC's mouse or by a touch on our smartphone.

Cellphones, smartphones, ipads, laptops etc have become an integral part of each & everyone's life that a day without these gadgets is unthinkable for any individual of any age group.

When we turn back and look at the road travelled so far, we can see a drastic and dramatic change in human civilization & life style.

However we often forget that the gadgets and inventions that have brought us closer have also made us far apart, shut us off from the real world around us, and made us live in a virtual world. We quite often forget the real world that is around us, & mostly not enjoy the present moment.

When we look around, in restaurants, buses, trains, parks, everywhere we see people mostly glued to their cellphones, completely shut off from the world around them. People busy with whatsapp and facebook - interacting & sharing with friends online but hardly showing any signs of recognition to anyone around; people typing fast on their keypads while making the simple gesture of a smile to someone right beside them seems so irrelevant whereas the artificial online chats with predefined smileys & emotions and lovely words that doesn't really define the real emotions or feelings seems to be genuine & captivating; people trying to capture the present moments in their cameras to enjoy those moments as their past, rather than living in their present. We see people who don't belong here, people who are physically present in the same spatial dimension, but living elsewhere in an unknown world of their own. We see people who really don't know the real world where they ought to live.

The gadgets which maketh our life today has made us prisoners. We have freed ourselves from our bitter past, from the bondage of slavery, colonial rule, apartheid and dictatorship into a democratic world to enjoy the fruits of freedom; however we are back as slaves & prisoners in our own little worlds that we have created.

Gotcha,... Santa Claus !!!

"Gotcha,... Santa Claus!" - {An X'mas Short Story}.

It was 24th of December - a Christmas eve. Little Johnny was in high spirits. The school had closed down for the holidays, and no matter what all fun or games this little six year old had, nothing could delight him more than the very fact that he needn't attend school for few days.

Christmas is the season of sharing of joy and happiness and spreading the meaning of love, for which Christ was born. Christmas signifies the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ in a manger in Bethlehem on a cold winter night. The mass held in church remembering Christ’s birth later came to be known as “Christ’s mass” or simply “Christmas”!

Christmas won't be complete without Christmas tree and Crib, Cake and Wine, Bells and Chime, Carols and Hymns, Gifts and Feasts and at last - Santa Claus! Most of these elements of Christmas were already ready for little Johnny and some were on its way and Johnny was all the more eager and enthusiastic and was looking forward to celebrating Christmas with all vigour.

It was late in the evening and though the sun had already set, the meek rays of the twilight gave a golden glow to the dusk. The trees and flowers which were drenched in the dew of the  evening mist of winter, were glinted by the golden rays of the sunset, and were swaying in the cool breeze of December. It appeared as if nature itself was decorating the place for Christmas. Though all the windows and doors of little Johnny's house were shut, the eerie howling sound of the breeze could be distinctly heard, which was blended with the distant sounds of Christmas carols and the chime of the church bell…

The trees and flowers bathed in golden sunshine swaying and dancing merrily to the tune of the singing breeze in the chill air of the December evening – was more than sufficient to say that it was the time of X’mas.

Johnny was sitting on the thick red carpet in the sitting room of his house playing with his old toys and gazing proudly at the magnificent Christmas tree that he and his mom had set up the previous week. The aroma of the plum cake being baked in the kitchen wafted through the air and filled the whole house. The light music of the melodious Christmas song - "I'm dreaming of a White Christmas" was being played in Johnny's dad's iPod. The decorations in the house were done the previous week itself and Johnny had helped his mom to set up the Christmas tree and the crib. Now he was too eager to receive his Christmas gift and to catch a glimpse of Santa Claus who comes secretly at night with the gifts.

Children are narrated the bedtime story of Santa Claus, who arrives every X'mas on a sledge driven by reindeers from North Pole, with gifts for children, while their parents themselves buy presents for them. When children wake up in the morning of the Christmas day they would be delighted and thrilled on seeing the gifts brought by Santa. Johnny had always wondered if the story was true and whether he could ever catch a glimpse of Santa during any of the Christmas's. Unlike previous times, he was determined to meet Santa that night!!!

Johnny's dad, Mr. Thomas was in the kitchen talking to his mom who was busy with the baking. Johnny stood up and walked towards the kitchen. He could overhear his dad talking to mom about plans of going to the church early in the morning for the Christmas mass and was discussing whether to wake Johnny up and take him along with them or leave him back at home.

Johnny walked to the kitchen and went straight to his mom and said, "Mommy, tonight I'm gonna stay awake to get a glimpse of Santa who will be bringing my gifts".

His parents gave a quick laughter and his mom patted him on his head and said "Okay honey, let's see if you will stay awake to see Santa and say “how-do-you-do” to him..."

She continued with her busy work, and Johnny ran back to the front room to play again with his toys.

Later that evening they had a quick dinner. Mrs. Thomas was wearied after all the homely chores, and Mr. Thomas was back home after a hectic day at office. They spoke little during their dinner. Afterwards, Johnny was persuaded to go to sleep and he reluctantly went to his bedroom which was upstairs. He wanted to stay awake and meet Santa Claus, but his parents insisted him to go to sleep. Reluctantly Johnny went to his bedroom. His mom continued her busy chores in the kitchen - the cleaning and the winding up stuff, while his dad was busy on cellphone chatting with his friends.

Johnny couldn't sleep as he was constantly thinking of Santa. He decided to stay awake and when Santa comes he'll rush down to meet him. He tried to stay awake by keeping his eyes wide open staring at the ceiling fan. The room was very quiet except for the creaking sound of the rotating ceiling fan. Though the lights in the room were put off, the light in the hallway filtered into his room through the keyhole of the door and from beneath the door. He could only barely see the ceiling fan, yet he tried to keep on staring at it to remain awake, but unfortunately he soon started feeling drowsy, and felt as if his eyelids were getting heavier. Finally he could no longer keep his eyelids wide open and he gently shut his eyes. It was pitch dark all around. The creaking sound of the rotating fan started to fade away and it became very feeble. His mind drifted away into the world of dreams and Johnny was fast asleep on his bed.

Instantly and instinctively, Johnny sat up on his bed in the middle of the night. He didn't realize for how long he was asleep but he could hear loud music and cheering downstairs and someone shouting his name. He soon sprung out of his bed and rushed downstairs.

He darted down the stairs but stopped short in utter amazement on seeing a man as tall as his dad draped in a bright red gown standing in the room singing a Christmas song and was calling out his name. He had a bright red cap on his head and was wearing a mask which had snow white beard, and chubby cheeks. His mom was right beside him clapping her hand. His dad was nowhere to be seen, but in his joy and delight little did he bother to ask his mom about dad.

"Oh,...Its Santa Claus!!!" cried out little Johnny.

Johnny was in ecstasy that at least finally Santa had decided to appear before him. He ran down and up to him and Santa gave him a warm hug and took him up in his arms and kissed him.

Santa danced around the room with Johnny in his arms and his mom close by who was cheering and clapping for little Johnny. Finally Santa placed him down on the floor and gave him his much awaited gift which he eagerly took in his tender hands. Johnny was so thrilled and amazed on seeing Santa that it was as if his long awaited dream of his little lifetime had borne fruit that night!

Later Santa and his mom persuaded him to go back to bed as it was very late at night and he had to wake up early for church. Johnny reluctantly climbed up the stairs with his precious gift clutched tight in his little hands, while constantly turning back and looking at his mom and Santa, who were waving their hands.

Back in his room, Johnny placed his gift on the table and went to bed. He couldn’t sleep and kept on thinking whether it was all a dream and wondered if he had actually gone down from his bed and met Santa or was he lying all the time on his bed and woke up suddenly after a nice dream!

Johnny tried to sleep but unfortunately he couldn’t. Curiosity and inquisitiveness overtook his slumber and he finally got out of his bed. He silently tip-toed down the stairs. He could see the light from his dad’s bedroom and could overhear his dad and mom talking softly. He silently crept to the bedroom which was partially open and peeped inside. His parents were facing the window and were talking to each other. The red gown of Santa was lying on the bed and the mask was hanging on the chair.

He pushed open the door and walked inside. His parent suddenly turned around and gave an astonished smile. His mom asked if he wasn’t feeling sleepy at all.

He glanced at his dad and gave an emphatic smile - a smile of a cop who had caught a crook red handed.

Johnny asked his dad with a giggle, "Dad, did Santa ask you to dress up like him for this Christmas or was it you who was pretending to be Santa during all Christmas’s ??"

With a chuckle his dad replied " Well, what do you think??”

Johnny retorted with a giggle, “So you thought you can take me in ???”

“Well, were you really taken in?”, replied his dad.

His parent laughed and his dad continued , "When I was a kid I too was taken in by the story of Santa Claus. Every Christmas my dad used to make me laugh by pretending to be Santa, by wearing a mask. As I grew older I could figure it out, and now it's my turn to wear the mask of Santa. When you are a kid you merely watch the game without knowing the rules, but when you grow older you learn the rules. You wear several masks, don several hats and makes others laugh, cries with others, share the joy, share the grievance. When you are too old, you hand over the baton and step down. That’s life and that’s the spirit of Christmas!"

Johnny gave an emphatic and euphoric smile and nodded his head. Johnny didn't fully understand what his dad said, but he was very contended for one thing that finally after being fooled for several years of his life, he could finally catch the elusive Santa Claus. He merrily  walked towards his bedroom. As he climbed up the stairs to his bedroom, little Johnny cried out in joy "Gotcha,... Santa Claus" !!!
